Discover the medieval citadel

Moncontour,"Petite Cité de Caractère", has a very rich architectural heritage.We propose the following visit to discover the citadel.

  • Start of the visitTourist Office and House Chouannerie and Revolution (4 pl de la Carrière.). This building dating from 1800 houses a superb scale model of the city of Moncontour in addition to various exhibitions.
  • out of the building, turn left then left again and admire the timber-framed house,Rue Charbbonnerie, restored to its former glory.
  • Continue the circuit to the right exiting the Place de la Carrière and head across to Le Martray.Here, timber-framed houses border the small square and alley of Rue Notre-Dameyou are now in. There is no trace of the Church Notre-Dame-de-la-Porte, only a plaque with a prayer dedicated to the Virgin remains.
  • To your right, is the entrance to the Place Penthièvre. ThePorte d'en Haut , gate missing since 1770, gave access to the citadel.
  • Enter now Place Penthièvre ,passing on the right the Venelle du Chateau. Access to the castle no longer exists and it is now divided into two private gardens. The square is named after the founding family of the city of Moncontour: family Penthièvre. Although quite modest today, the square owes its splendor and prosperity to the the cloth trade of the 17 & 18 centuries . During the Revolution, the house of Latimier Clézieu (No. 2) hosted the Republican General Hoche who met various leaders of the Chouans, including Boishardy, on March 19, 1795. La Maison de la Chouannerie et da la Révolution, 4 pl. de la Carrière, retraces all these episodes for you.
  • Now enter theChurch St Mathurin , pushing the small door on the righthand side of the facade and admire the six listed stained glass windows from the 16th century.
